Patient Financial Services
At Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, our goal is to provide patients with high-quality care, and the best possible hospital experience, from registration through discharge. We understand that navigating billing, insurance and medical records can seem overwhelming at times. Many patients appreciate the help of our trained financial counselors who make every attempt to simplify the financial aspects of their hospital visit so patients are able to focus on their healthcare.
The hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and many private health insurance plans, and submits bills to the insuror on the patient’s behalf. Our process allows patients the opportunity to understand how health insurance benefits will be applied and ask specific questions regarding deductibles and/or co-payments that may be their responsibility. While individuals may have insurance coverage to help pay their medical bills, the patient is financially responsible for any amount not paid by their insurance.
Upon admission, patients are asked to provide the hospital with information about their insurance plan, current insurance card, and a photo ID such as a driver's license, military ID, or government issued ID.
Like many hospitals across the country, when patients are scheduling, registering, stabilized or progressing toward discharge, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital works with them regarding payment options for any portion of the hospital bill not covered by insurance. Trained financial counselors may visit with patients to review insurance information to explain how their coverage will be applied, answer questions, and help anticipate any personal expenses associated with their care. The counselors provide information about the options available for payment and are available to assist in setting up payment arrangements. If a patient does not have health insurance, the counselor can discuss eligibility for financial assistance for those who qualify or other financial arrangements and alternatives.
After discharge, patients with private insurance will receive a summary of charges for services received during hospitalization. For emergency room care or certain tests or treatments received in the hospital, patients may receive separate bills from physicians. These bills are generated for professional services performed by physicians in diagnosing and interpreting test results during the hospital stay. Services such as those provided by an emergency room physician, radiologist, pathologist or cardiologist are examples of separate bills patients may receive.
The hospital’s Patient Accounts Department and financial counselors welcome questions and are available to provide assistance Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They can be reached by calling 570-829-8111. The hospital can accept payments made in cash, check, money order or credit card, in person or on-line.
