Commonwealth Health Unites Eight Local Hospitals and Extensive Network of Healthcare Agencies and Providers

Cor Catena, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital CEO, named to newly created market CEO role

SCRANTON, Pa. (February 1, 2012) – Northeastern Pennsylvania’s largest network of hospitals has united today under the name Commonwealth Health. The name recognizes the network affiliates’ shared commitment to the common good of patients and communities in the region. Each hospital, agency and physician practice will retain its current name but will also refer to itself as an affiliate of Commonwealth Health.

While hospital leadership teams will stay the same, Cornelio (Cor) Catena will serve as CEO of Commonwealth Health in addition to his role as CEO of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. As market CEO, Catena will facilitate planning among the affiliates to determine how best to provide the quality healthcare services needed across the service area.

A Sizeable Provider Network
The eight hospitals in the system are Berwick Hospital Center, First Hospital, Mid-Valley Hospital, Moses Taylor Hospital, Regional Hospital of Scranton, Special Care Hospital, Tyler Memorial Hospital and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Also affiliated are the physicians of InterMountain Medical Group and Physicians Health Alliance and five home health and hospice agencies – Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Berwick, Commonwealth Home Health of Moses Taylor, Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Scranton, Commonwealth Home Health of Tyler, and Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Wilkes-Barre.

“While we will continue to operate as eight individual hospitals, we will develop and share our respective strengths and combine our vast resources for the greater good,” said Catena. “Today we operate with a renewed and unified sense of purpose—to utilize all our skills and experiences to better serve our patients across the region.”

The health system includes 1,600 physicians, 6,500 employees, and more than 1,300 beds. The hospitals treat more than 50,000 inpatients, deliver more than 4,000 babies, perform more than 32,000 surgeries and care for more than 136,000 emergency room patients each year. The Commonwealth Health hospitals hold the leading market share in their primary service areas, making the system the number one choice for care in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

United Commitment To Quality Patient Care
Collectively, the hospitals of Commonwealth Health have earned significant recognition for clinical care, including the most HealthGrades awards and honors from U.S. News & World Report and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Each hospital brings unique resources to the community it serves.

Together, Commonwealth Health is combining vast resources that will enhance the quality of patient care. Patients will benefit from an extended network of physicians through recruitment of new physicians as well as the sharing of specialists throughout the system. The physician network will increase access to care throughout the footprint, from Peckville to Berwick.

Significant Impact On The Region’s Economy
Over the next five years, more than a quarter of a billion dollars will be invested in the hospitals of Commonwealth Health to support the delivery of quality patient care. While these were once tax-exempt organizations, the hospitals now operate as tax-paying entities, generating millions of dollars in new revenue for local and state governments, funds that support schools, civic infrastructure, and salaries of municipal firefighters and police officers.

The hospitals also support civic and charitable organizations and offer additional support to their communities by conducting health fairs and educational programs, offering free or discounted health screenings, and sponsoring other activities that improve the quality of life for local residents.

Focused On The Future Of The Region
Working together, the hospitals of Commonwealth Health will transform healthcare delivery in Northeastern Pennsylvania through formalized centers of excellence in cardiology, orthopedics and obstetrics and sharing best practices that meet nationally recognized standards for quality, safety and patient satisfaction.
