HRSA Grant Award:

The program has received word that a grant submission for residency expansion funded through the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education portion of the Affordable Care Act was favorably reviewed.  Implementation of this expansion and maximizing our ability to train highly qualified family physicians will unfold over the next few months and the positive impact this will have for our program as well as health care in northeastern Pennsylvania is exciting.  Please stay tuned for more announcements as this unfolds!

New Year, New Name:

Wyoming Valley Family Medicine Residency Program has been renamed Wilkes-Barre Family Medicine Residency Program as part of the rebranding of the Commonwealth Health System of Community Health System.  We are excited for the rebranding as it allows us to better identify our region to individuals not familiar with the Wyoming Valley.

Future Plans for Grads:

Robbie Bahl, MD is with us until the end of September and then will be relocating to New York City to begin an Addiction Medicine Fellowship at The Addiction Institute of New York, St Luke's-Roosevelt and Columbia University Hospitals.

Shanti Eranti, MD will be working as an associate physician at Boice Willis clinic in Rocky Mount, NC with a focus on outpatient medicine.

Mythri Gollapalle, MD will be returning to the San Francisco Bay Area to reunite with her husband after being separated for training.  She is expecting her first child later this summer and then plans to pursue an outpatient family medicine position later this fall.

Pardeep Kumar, MD is relocating to Memphis, TN to begin an ER fellowship with Methodist Hospital.

Obianuju Mba, MD is planning to relocate to Denver, Colorado where she and her husband will be enjoying their newborn and she will be working as a hospitalist at Longmont United Hospital.

Position Update:

Dipin Kaur, MD has accepted a position as Assistant Professor &  Site Director for the Family Medicine Clerkship at Medical University of South Carolina starting July, 2012.  During her time with our program, Dr. Kaur distinguished herself in her desire to continue to be involved with clinical medical education and we are certian this position will suit her well.  Best of luck, Dipin.

New Chief Residents:

On Wednesday, December 21, 2011 chief residents for the upcoming year were named.  We congratulate Shilpa Patel, MD and Christina Raguckas, DO who were awarded this distinction at the residency's annual holiday party.   This honor is afforded to residents who have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities during residency and we look forward to the impact they will have on our program.  Congratulations!

Congratluations Dr. Kaur:

Dipinpreet Kaur, MD recently completed her training with us and has relocated to South Carolina to take a position working with the University of South Carolina Medical School.  We wish her the best and know that she will do well in her future practice.

We also welcome the following new second year residents:  Jimi Oluwole, DO a graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, GA Campus is due to start on August 1st.  Abha Kadam, MD and Ruchika Saini, MD both graduates of Ross University School of Medicine will begin on August 29th.

Future Plans of Grads:

Chetna Dua, MD is relocating to Virginia to be closer to family.  While preparing for boards and considering the ideal practice situation, she is looking forward to spending some quality time with her daughters and husband and will be working part-time as a hospitalist.

Rabia Hasan, MD will be relocating to Minnesota where she has accepted a position with the Mayo Clinic in a traditional family practice setting and will incorporate both inpatient  and outpatient medicine.

Keino Johnson, DO will be returning to Philadelphia where he plans to practice ambulatory medicine at the Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia along with Dr. Mukherjee.

Dipinpreet Kaur, MD is relocating to South Carolina where she will be joining her fiancée who has accepted a neurology residency postion. She is looking for an outpatient position but also considering a sports medicine fellowship.

Kira Kirikiadi, MD will be moving to Rochester to be closer to family. She will be joining Lifetime Health for a primarily outpatient-based practice.

Dhirendra Kumar, MD will be starting a Geriatrics Fellowship at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD

Arpita Mukherjee, MD plans to practice ambulatory medicine at the Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia along with Dr. Johnson.

Faculty Publish Nationally:
Dr. Gross and Dr. Ference were happy to see the publication of their article:  “Pharmaceutical Representative Rounds: Teaching Resident Physician-Pharmaceutical Representative Interactions” published in the May/June edition of the Osteopathic Family Physician.

AOA Inspection Results:
Our program was very pleased to hear from the American Osteopathic Association that we have received 5 years accreditation for our osteopathic family medicine residency education.  This is the maximum amount of time allowed in the accreditation process and demonstrates excellence across the training program.  It took a group effort to prepare for the inspection and this reflects the high quality of education we provide to our residents.  Congratulations!

Our program was very excited to hear that we matched with Millicent Tiwaah in the Feb, 2011 Match.  Millicent is a student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and we look forward to welcoming her to our upcoming intern class.

New EMR!
After much preparation, our office went live with AthenaClinicals as our new electronic medical record.  While it did prove to be a struggle, the new system is a significant improvement over our previous one and should allow us to maximize our patient interactions and document in a timely fashion!

Third year residents accept fellowship offers:

  1. Mohamadreza Azadfard, MD has accepted an offer to complete a fellowship in addiction medicine at SUNY/Buffalo University. This is a two year fellowship which will include one year of clinical work and another focused on research.
  2. Fatima Fazilli, MD has accepted an offer to complete a geriatrics fellowship located at the Huffington Center on Aging associated with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  Upon completion of the fellowship, she will be eligible to be certified in geriatrics medicine.
  3. Jignesh Patel, MD has accepted an offer to complete a geriatrics fellowship at the Carle Foundation Hospital in affiliation with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL.  Upon completion of his fellowship, he intends to enter practice in Springfield, MS.

Third year residents accept offers:

  1. Dr. Govind Kachhadiya has accepted a hospitalist position for Pottsown Memorial Medical Center in Pottstown, PA
  2. Dr. Mokarroma Sharmin has accepted a practice offer for the Wellspan System in Dallastown, PA.  Dr. Sharmin is looking forward to starting her career in this progressive and dynamic office. 
  3. Dr. James Wornyo has accepted a traditional inpatient and outpatient family medicine position with Culbertson Memorial Hospital at Rushville, IL.
